The Coziest Way to See Charleston’s Festival of Lights

Ask any Charlestonian what makes the holidays feel like the holidays, and the James Island Holiday Festival of Lights is near the top of the list. For more than 30 years, families have bundled up, piled into the car and inched through millions of twinkling lights on the way to a cup of cocoa and a visit with Santa.

The only catch? That line of headlights snaking down Riverland Drive. This season, Chicora Tours is making the Festival of Lights easy again: no driving, no parking, no wrangling the kids in the backseat. Just a warm van, homemade hot chocolate and a local guide who handles everything.

What Is the James Island Holiday Festival of Lights?

The Holiday Festival of Lights is Charleston County Parks’ signature holiday event, held every year at James Island County Park since 1990. The 2026 season marks its 37th year, running nightly from November 13 through December 31.

The route winds three miles through the park, past more than 750 light displays and millions of bulbs. Many are pure Lowcountry: glowing palmetto trees, sea creatures and a lit-up Ravenel Bridge.

Halfway through, the festival opens up into a village of holiday fun:

  • Marshmallow roasting over open fires
  • The Enchanted Walking Trail through the lit trees
  • Festival train rides and an old-fashioned carousel
  • Gift shops and the sweet shop for holiday treats
  • Visits with Santa on select nights before Christmas
